Do you run your life, or does it run you?

It’s Time to Take Back Control of Your Time and Energy

If you always put yourself and the things that truly matter at the bottom of your to-do list, it’s time to make a change.

How Do You Spend Your Time?

Are you constantly reacting to whatever screams the loudest? Does time seem to run away from you every day?

The truth is, we all get the same 24 hours in a day. You can’t create more time, but you can make better choices about how you spend the time you have.

When you intentionally choose how to spend your time, you live life with purpose, investing energy in what’s most important to you. Honouring your priorities and focusing on one thing at a time reduces stress and helps you accomplish more, without the overwhelm.

Multi-Tasking Is Overrated

Do you catch yourself thinking about unfinished tasks or worrying about what’s next, rather than focusing on what you’re doing now?

Trying to juggle too many things at once leaves you feeling scattered, rushed, and dissatisfied. Multi-tasking often results in several half-finished projects instead of one job well done.

When you give your full attention to what you’re doing—or to the people you’re with—you’ll feel more present, more satisfied, and more at peace.

Choose to focus your thoughts and energy on one thing at a time, and do it well. You’ll get more done and experience greater fulfilment.

How Do You Use Your Time?

Life is full of choices. Every decision you make about how to spend your time means giving up something else.

Too often, we get stuck doing things we think we should do, rather than what’s truly meaningful to us. When you know your priorities, it’s easier to make wise choices about where to spend your time.

Focus on what matters most, and you’ll feel more fulfilled because you’re living intentionally.

Set Priorities

Setting clear priorities helps you live purposefully and achieve more with less stress. Ask yourself:

✅ Why am I doing this?
✅ Is this something I want to do, or something I feel I should do?
✅ Could someone else do it?
✅ Does it have to be done now?
✅ Does it support my goals and honour my values?

Once you’ve defined what’s truly important, it’s easier to prioritise and say no to the things that drain you. Remember—priorities shift. Different seasons of life bring different needs.

Schedule Your Time

Plan the things that matter most—and give them deadlines. Build buffer zones into your day for the unexpected. Even a simple 30-minute daily margin for “me time” or catching up can make a world of difference.

Dealing with a Backlog

If you’re behind, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But you can catch up.

💡 Tip: Create a backlog tray and stack tasks with the most urgent on top. Separate the backlog from new tasks. Deal with new tasks as they arise, and allocate 30 minutes a day to tackle the backlog.

This simple strategy helps you chip away at what feels impossible, and that momentum is so encouraging!

Questions to Ask Yourself

  • What energises me?

  • What drains me?

  • What do I want more of in my life?

  • What’s the most important thing I need right now?

  • What’s stopping me from having it?

  • What will I do to move forward?

Track How You Spend Your Time

For one week, keep a detailed log of how you spend each day. Then ask yourself:

  • Where does most of my time go?

  • What am I missing out on because of my current habits?

  • How can I make more time for what matters most?

  • What can I delegate?

  • What can I do less of?

  • What can I do differently?

Take Action—Release Time and Energy

Think about how you misuse time:

  • Checking emails constantly

  • Re-reading paperwork multiple times before dealing with it

  • Doing tasks others could do

  • Watching TV mindlessly

  • Saying yes out of obligation

Now, make a list of things you can change. For example:

✅ Handle mail only once—bin, file, or act on it immediately.
✅ Ask family members to take on one more chore.
✅ Arrange grocery delivery.
✅ Watch only the TV shows you really want to watch.
✅ Say no to invitations that drain you.

Something to Think About

Why do you say yes when you really want to say no? Every yes means a no to something else. What are you saying no to by saying yes?

Make your needs a priority. Say no to something today—and buy yourself time to think. Remember, you can always say yes later.

Take Action

Reading this article is a good start, but transformation happens when you take action.

Set aside time in your diary to answer the questions and put the steps into practice. You’ll be so glad you did.
